There’s a special kind of magic in the last of anything — especially when it’s a 300-ton steel giant that once ruled the rails.
Meet Illinois Central No. 1518, a 2-8-2 Mikado steam locomotive built by the Lima Locomotive Works in November 1923. She was part of the Illinois Central’s legendary fleet of over 500 Mikados — the third largest in America. Originally numbered 1932, she later carried 1420 before receiving her final number, 1518, in 1951.
Her working life was spent mostly hauling heavy coal trains between Central City and Paducah, Kentucky, though she occasionally ventured across the broader IC system that stretched from Chicago to New Orleans. When the diesel era arrived, No. 1518 earned her place in history as the very last steam locomotive in regular service on the Illinois Central, retired in 1960.
Today she stands proudly on static display in downtown Paducah, Kentucky — a living monument to the Steam Age.
